Kerala MVD checks around the school year

Kochi is in Ernakulam district, Kerala. The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) runs pre-season inspections and checks after schools reopen. The two reports below are dated and attributed. They are news reports, so please ask the Ernakulam Regional Transport Office (RTO) what applies to your buses.

Pre-season inspection at Kalamassery (May 2026). The Times of India reported that the MVD planned safety inspections of school buses at Kalamassery before the 2026-27 school year. The District Regional Transport Officer said vehicles would be cleared only after the transport commissioner's instructions were followed.
What the inspection looks at. According to the report: golden yellow paint with a stripe below the windows, an On School Duty board on rented vehicles, a first-aid box, fire extinguishers, horizontal window grills, a qualified attendant, speed governors, enough emergency exits, and a list of the children's guardians' phone numbers kept in the vehicle.
Checks after schools reopened (June 2026). The Hindu reported that the MVD stepped up inspections of school buses and other student carriers in Ernakulam after schools reopened on 2 June, with special enforcement squads in Kochi city and its suburbs and a drive called Apakadarahitha Adhyanavarsham (Accident-Free Academic Year).
Recent safety norms. The same report says a school's vehicles were found to lack fitness papers and had not followed recently revised norms, including CCTV cameras and display requirements inside the vehicle. Officials said inspections would continue in the coming weeks.

The report mentions a list of children's guardians' phone numbers kept in the vehicle. A paper list can go out of date. Ask any seller: Where is the guardian contact stored, and who can see it? As described on the Satcop India website, the parent app and admin panel keep trip and student records.

Checks that follow the school bell

The Hindu says squads worked at morning and evening peak hours. A school can keep its own records too. Ask: Can the school show the route, stops and trip times of a bus on a given day?

Monsoon, backwaters and busy junctions
