RFID Attendance for School Buses: How Tap In, Tap Out Works
Last checked: 3 October 2026. Our own product, so read with that in mind. My School Ride is a product of Satcop India Pvt. Ltd, the company behind this website. We show where each fact comes from. How we compare
Quick answer
On a school bus, RFID attendance means each student taps a card on a reader when boarding and alighting. As described on the Satcop India website, My School Ride uses a handrail-mounted card reader on the bus. Students scan their ID or RFID cards when they board or alight, and the in/out is logged against the route. Attendance goes to the school system and the parent app.
In Maharashtra, the Gazette of 16 July 2026 asks every school and bus or van operator to keep a daily attendance record of every student using the vehicle, including the time of boarding and de-boarding (rule 6C).
How tap in, tap out works
- Card. The student has an RFID card, often built into the ID card.
- Reader. A card reader is fitted on the bus handrail. The student taps it on boarding and on alighting.
- Record. The in/out is logged against the route and shows in the school's system and the parent app.
Who sees what
| Who | What the Satcop India website says |
|---|---|
| Parents | An attendance view in the parent app, and pickup and drop reminders. SMS or board alerts where the school enables them |
| Driver or attendant | An in/out report, assigned students, and an attendant attendance mark in the driver app |
| Transport manager | RFID attendance on the central live dashboard |
| School admin | Reports by class, grade or date, ready for school systems |
What the Maharashtra rules say about attendance
- Daily record (rule 6C): the school and the bus or van operator keep a daily attendance record of every student using the vehicle, with boarding and de-boarding times.
- Extra supervision (rule 6C): for students of pre-primary and primary classes (up to Standard five), the Gazette asks for additional supervision on every trip by a lady attendant or other designated staff. A card reader does not replace that, and we do not say it does.
- Digital attendance (rule 10A): the app that is part of the Digital Safety Monitoring System should give live vehicle tracking, digital attendance, automated alerts and role-based access.
- Vehicles must comply within three months from Gazette publication (16 July 2026). We do not give a calendar date. Ask your RTO about the date that applies to you.
The Gazette does not say the record must be RFID. We do not say RFID attendance meets the rules by itself.

How does RFID attendance work on a school bus?
As described on the Satcop India website, a handrail-mounted card reader is fitted on the bus. Students scan their ID or RFID cards when they board or alight, and the in/out is logged against the route.
Does Maharashtra require attendance on school buses?
Yes. The Gazette of 16 July 2026 asks the school and the bus or van operator to keep a daily attendance record of every student using the vehicle, with the time of boarding and de-boarding (rule 6C). It does not say the record must be RFID.
Does an RFID reader replace the bus attendant?
No. For pre-primary and primary students (up to Standard five), the Gazette asks for additional supervision on every trip by a lady attendant or other designated staff (rule 6C). We do not say a card reader replaces that.

The site lists an attendance view and pickup and drop reminders in the parent app, and SMS or board alerts where the school enables them. Terms may apply.
