How to Choose a School Bus Tracking App in India
Last checked: 3 October 2026. Our own product, so read with that in mind. My School Ride is a product of Satcop India Pvt. Ltd, the company behind this website. We show where each fact comes from. How we compare
Quick answer
There is no one best school bus tracking app for every school. The right one depends on your buses, your state's rules and what parents need. Use the seven questions below, ask each company to answer in writing, and use the table to see what My School Ride publishes on each point.
What a good school bus tracking app should do
Every school and every bus route is different. So instead of a long list of claims, here are seven questions to ask about any school bus tracking app. We use the same seven questions in the table below.
- Can parents see the bus on a live map? This is the main reason schools buy tracking. Ask how often the location updates, and what happens when the phone network is weak.
- Does the app tell parents what they need to know? Look for alerts when the bus is near the stop, and when a child boards or gets off. Check that a parent with more than one child can use one login.
- How is attendance recorded? Some systems use cards (RFID), some use QR codes, some rely on the attendant. Ask which one the system uses, and who has to do the work each day.
- Are there cameras, and who can see the footage? Cameras can help after an incident. Ask where the footage is stored and who is allowed to see it.
- Is there a panic or SOS option, and who gets the alert? Ask who receives the alert, and how fast someone can act. A button in an app and a panic button fitted on the bus are not always the same thing.
- Does the system fit the rules in your state? Ask any company to show in writing how its product meets each point of your state's rules. See the Maharashtra box below.
- What does it cost, and what is included? Ask for the price of the device, the SIM or data, the app, the cameras, installation and support. Ask if GST is extra and what happens after the first year.
One more thing to check: many school bus apps only work if the school has added the parent's mobile number. If a parent cannot log in, this is the first thing to check.
What the Maharashtra rules now ask for
The official Government Gazette of 16 July 2026 changed the Maharashtra rules for school buses. In short, it asks for:
- A tracking device (VLTD) with a panic button, with specifications not inferior to AIS-140, in every school bus, education institution bus and school van.
- A Digital Safety Monitoring System: the tracking device, a link to the State-level monitoring platform, CCTV or video surveillance, and a mobile or web app with live tracking, digital attendance, automated alerts and role-based access.
- A CCTV feed to parents through the app.
- A daily attendance record of every student, with boarding and de-boarding times.
- Compliance within three months from Gazette publication (16 July 2026).
This page covers Maharashtra only. Check your own state's rules.
The seven questions, and what My School Ride publishes
My School Ride is our product. The middle column shows only what our own public pages and app-store listing say, checked on 3 October 2026. Use the first column as a checklist for any company you are looking at. The numbers in brackets point to the Sources list below.
| What to check | What My School Ride publishes (our product) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Live bus location on a map | The Google Play listing says parents can track buses in real time. The satcop.com page says the GPS device sends location about every 5 seconds. | [3], [4] |
| Parent app on Android | Android: "My School Ride" on Google Play. | [4] |
| Alerts to parents and the school | Pickup and drop alerts and "about 2 km before the stop" awareness for parents. School managers can get a message when a bus enters a no-go zone. | [3], [4] |
| Student attendance | Students tap RFID cards on a reader on the bus, or pass UHF gates at school. The parent app has an attendance view. | [3] |
| Camera or dashcam | Optional 4G cameras and dashcams, with a live feed "where enabled". Some features depend on the school package. We do not say these meet the Maharashtra CCTV rule. | [3] |
| Panic or SOS | The driver app has an SOS to the school admin. This is an app feature. It is not the same as the panic button fitted on the bus that the Gazette asks for. | [3], [1] |
| AIS-140 GPS device offered | The Satcop India website describes a GPS device "Designed to meet AIS 140 standards as laid down by ARAI, physically tested by ICAT for 60 days". We make no further claim about it. | [5] |
| Parent login | Parents log in with the mobile number the school has registered. | [4] |
| GPS device or phone only | A GPS device is fitted on the bus. We do not claim a phone-only option. | [3] |
| Price shown on a public page | Ask for a quote. The My School Ride website says pricing is calculated as per the requirement. | [6] |
Which one fits which school
No product is right for everyone. Here is what to ask, depending on your situation.
If parents mainly want to see the live location
Focus on questions 1 and 2. Ask how often the location updates, what the parent sees when the network is weak, and how a parent with two children logs in. Ask for a trial on one route before you decide.
If your school already has cameras
Ask whether the system can show the camera feed in the parent app, and where your existing cameras keep footage. The Gazette asks for CCTV or video surveillance with a feed to parents. Ask the Transport Department whether a dashcam counts as CCTV.
If you run many buses or several branches
Ask whether one login can manage all branches, what reports you get, and who answers calls when something stops working. The My School Ride website says it supports many buses, routes and branches from one login.
If you are in Maharashtra
Ask each company to show in writing how it meets the Gazette points above: the device, the panic button, the cameras, the app and the attendance record. Ask who certifies the app. The Gazette says "certified" but does not say who certifies it.
Questions to ask any company before you sign
- Which GPS device model do you supply, and can I see its test details?
- How often does the location update, and what happens when the network is weak?
- Who can see the camera footage, and where is it stored?
- Who gets the panic or SOS alert, and what do they do next?
- What is in the price: device, SIM or data, app, cameras, installation, support? Is GST extra?
- What do I pay after the first year?
- How long does it take to go live on my buses, and who installs the devices?
- What happens if a device stops working? Who fixes it, and how fast?
- Can parents log in on day one? Who adds their mobile numbers?
- Can I speak to a school that already uses it?
How we compared
We use the same seven questions for every company. For any company, including ours, we use only its own public website pages and app-store listings, and we show the link and the date. We do not guess. If a fact has no public source, we leave it out. We do not give scores or rankings. Read the full method: How we compare.
Frequently asked questions
What should I look for in a school bus tracking app?
Look for seven things: a live map for parents, alerts that tell parents what they need to know, a clear way to record attendance, cameras and who can see the footage, a panic or SOS option and who receives it, a fit with your state's rules, and a clear price that says what is included. Ask each company to answer in writing.
Do parents need to pay to use a school bus tracking app?
It depends on the company and on your school. Many parent apps work only after the school has signed up and added your mobile number, so ask your school's transport office before you install. Any charge to parents depends on the school's arrangement with the company, so ask your school.
Why does the app say my mobile number is not registered?
Many school bus apps let a parent in only if the school has added the parent's mobile number. Ask your school's transport office to add or check your number. If it still does not work, contact the app's support. For My School Ride, call +91 8600 002222 or chat on WhatsApp at https://wa.link/ri3w49.
Do I need a GPS device on the bus, or can a phone do the job?
Some systems use a GPS device fitted on the bus. Some use a phone. In Maharashtra, the Gazette asks for a tracking device (VLTD) with a panic button in school buses and vans. Whether a phone-only setup can meet that rule is not stated in the Gazette, so ask your RTO. Read more: Phone-based vs GPS device school bus tracking.
What do the new Maharashtra school bus rules mean for tracking apps?
The Gazette of 16 July 2026 asks for a "certified" app with live tracking, digital attendance, automated alerts and role-based access, and for a CCTV feed to parents through the app. The Gazette does not say who certifies the app. Ask each company to show in writing how its app meets each point.
Is a dashcam the same as the CCTV the rules ask for?
The Gazette says "CCTV or video surveillance" and asks for a feed to parents. It does not say whether a dashcam counts. Ask your RTO or the Transport Department before you rely on a dashcam. For My School Ride cameras: we do not say our cameras meet the Maharashtra CCTV rule by themselves. Ask us for the camera details and check each point with your RTO.
Is My School Ride the best school bus tracking app?
We make My School Ride, so we cannot be neutral. That is why we show the questions we ask, the sources for each fact and the date we checked. Use them to compare My School Ride with any other company, and choose the one that answers your questions best.
