RFID vs UHF Attendance for a School Gate
Last checked: 4 October 2026. Our own product, so read with that in mind. My School Ride is a product of Satcop India Pvt. Ltd, the company behind this website. We show where each fact comes from. How we compare
Quick answer
At a school gate, RFID and UHF attendance both use a small tag and a reader. The main difference the Satcop India website describes is how a student is counted. With RFID, the student taps a card on a reader. With UHF, a reader at the gate or classroom detects the tag automatically as the student passes by, so there is no manual roll call at the entrance.
This page uses only the website's wording for My School Ride. The site does not give read distance, accuracy, security details or limits for large campuses, so we do not either. Ask us for those at a demo.
What the two terms mean
Both RFID and UHF are ways to identify a tag with a reader. In general, a tag holds a small chip with an ID number, and a reader picks up that ID. UHF is one type of RFID, which works with a different kind of tag and reader from a card that you tap. This paragraph is general knowledge about the technology. It is not a claim about My School Ride.
RFID and UHF attendance: what the site says
| RFID (tap) | UHF (pass-by) | |
|---|---|---|
| How a student is counted | "Students carry RFID cards (often in ID cards) and tap a reader mounted on the bus handrail when boarding or alighting." | "UHF readers at school gates or classrooms detect UHF tags automatically as students pass by." |
| Where the site describes it | On the school bus, at the handrail | At school gates or classrooms |
| Effort at the door | One tap per student | "Without a manual roll call at the entrance" |
| Record | Attendance is recorded in real time | Records appear in real time for school admins |
| Parent alerts | "SMS/board alerts depend on the school package" | Where the school enables them. The site says terms may apply |
Not stated on the site for either: read distance, accuracy, security and privacy details, how many students can be read at once, and the fit for large campuses.
Which is better for a school gate?
The honest answer is that it depends on your school. The website describes UHF for gates and classrooms because nobody has to stop and tap. It describes RFID tap for the bus handrail. Whether UHF suits your gate depends on how your gate is laid out, how many students arrive together, and what you want to record. We do not claim one is better. Ask the seller to show both at your gate.
What the Maharashtra Gazette says about attendance
The Gazette of 16 July 2026 asks the school and the bus or van operator to keep a daily attendance record of every student using a school bus, including the time of boarding and de-boarding (rule 6C). It also asks for digital attendance in the app that is part of the Digital Safety Monitoring System (rule 10A). The Gazette does not mention RFID or UHF, and we do not say either meets the rules by itself. Vehicles must comply within three months from Gazette publication (16 July 2026). Ask your RTO about the date that applies to you.
Questions to ask any seller
- Where will the readers go: gate, classroom, bus, or all of these? Who installs them?
- How far from the reader does a tag work, and how do you test that at my gate?
- What happens when many students arrive at once?
- What do the tags look like, and can they sit inside the student ID card?
- What happens when a student forgets the tag or card?
- Who can see student records, and how is access controlled?
- Do parents get alerts? Is there a charge for SMS?
- What is the full cost: readers, tags, installation, support and GST?
What about cost?
We do not give a price here. The cost depends on the number of readers, tags, the places they go and the support you need.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between RFID and UHF attendance?
As described on the Satcop India website, with RFID the student taps a card on a reader. With UHF, readers at school gates or classrooms detect the tags automatically as students pass by, without a manual roll call at the entrance.
What is a UHF attendance system, and how is it different from RFID?
A UHF attendance system uses tags that a reader detects as a student passes. The Satcop India website describes UHF readers at school gates or classrooms for this. It describes RFID cards that students tap on a handrail reader on the school bus. UHF is a type of RFID, which is general knowledge about the technology.
Is a UHF attendance system suitable for large school campuses?
The Satcop India website does not say, so we do not claim it. The gate layout and the number of students who arrive together matter. Ask us to show it at your school.
How secure is a UHF RFID attendance system?
The Satcop India website does not give security details for UHF, so we do not claim any. Ask how student records are protected and who can see them.
Which is better for a school gate, RFID or UHF?
It depends on your gate. The site describes UHF for gates and classrooms because there is no tap, and RFID tap for the bus handrail. Ask the seller to show both at your gate before you choose.
Does the Maharashtra Gazette require RFID or UHF?
No. The Gazette of 16 July 2026 asks for a daily attendance record of every student using a school bus (rule 6C) and digital attendance in the app (rule 10A). It does not name RFID or UHF.
How much does RFID or UHF attendance cost?
Ask for a quote. The quote should list the readers, tags, installation, support and GST.
